I live in East Yorkshire, in Kirkella on the outskirts of West Hull and having retired in 2015, I have time now to share some of my photos and birding interests.
Most of my birding is done in North and East Yorkshire, particularly coastal areas such as Spurn Point and Flamborough Head.
The Northumberland coast is another favourite, as is the Isle of Mull and the West coast of Scotland.
I now like to spend the winter in the Algarve for the longer days and warmer temperatures. Based in the small town of Alvor, it is in easy reach of the entire Algarve and the superb grasslands of the Alentejo region. Many previous visits have been made in May and September. Former holiday favourites for birding have been Corsica and Mallorca which I have visited for quite a few years.
My bird-watching interest began between the ages of 10 and 15 when I was a Young Ornithologists Club (junior RSPB) member in York.
I carried the Observers' Book of Birds, my Dad's binoculars and a notebook. I was taken on trips by a couple of RSPB members from whom I learned a great deal. One of my memories was a day at Fraisthorpe when tanker oil-spills were quite frequent and I sat in their car, clutching an oiled Long-tailed Duck as we sped off to the RSPCA at Bridlington - one of several trips we did that day with Guillemots and other casualties. The Dales was another favourite trip, finding my first Redstarts and Pied Flycatchers.
How times have changed and now I carry a digital SLR and 600mm lens. My i-phone contains Collins Bird Guides, world weather, tide times, Satnav, Google Earth and bird alert apps - information at your fingertips!
